Deborah Aitken has led a life of variety and adventure. No stranger to relocation, she started her education in Detroit, Michigan, and moved to different states and countries, attending 10 schools by the time she graduated high school in Rome, Italy.
A lifelong professional concert pianist, she has been able to indulge her wanderlust by performing across the US and around the world. It also has given her the opportunity to work with many different cultures, giving her the ability to see things from differing points of view.
Coming from a large extended family of artists, Deborah cannot help but see real estate from an esthetic point of view, whether architectural design, interior design or landscape design. Her personal experiences with rehabbing “tear-downs” has equipped her with the knowledge and imagination to envision small changes which can vastly affect the purpose, use, value and beauty of a property, aiding both sellers and buyers.
After a 25-year career as a college music professor, Deborah was drawn to real estate through her personal experience. Her first investment of $8,000 yielded a return of over $100,000, the first half of which was realized within three months of investment. In subsequent enterprises, she doubled and tripled her money. Deborah now devotes herself to using the same remarkable intuition regarding appreciation of properties for her clients. She is licensed in North Carolina, South Carolina and California, and works primarily in residential and land transactions. For several decades, she has had a home in the Los Angeles area — a town she knows better than any cab driver — and also has a home in the Charlotte, NC area. While she works with great teams in both Los Angeles and Charlotte, her international connections have helped her find distinctive properties in other countries, including residences and investments.
While caring for her mother in her late years, Deborah became aware of how urgently many in the older population need advocates, so she also became licensed in insurance and has helped many seniors with that aspect of their lives. She also earned the SRES (Senior Real Estate Specialist) designation from the National Association of Realtors; this is awarded after completion of intensive training in the myriad concerns of seniors as they look toward changes in their later years.
Her lifelong passion for animals has taken many forms. She trained her dog, Maurice, to be a Therapy Dog, and takes him regularly to visit nursing homes and to a library where children read to him. Always interested in conservation, she worked with Richard Leakey on a project to perform concerts to raise money for anti-poaching efforts, has participated in several scientific projects with endangered animals and now donates a portion of each real estate transaction to animal conservation efforts.
You know the saying, “A man’s home is his castle” — so whether it’s a relatively modest property or a multi-million dollar mansion, Deborah treats every man and woman and each transaction with the same degree of care and respect.
